Newcastle United and Joelinton remain deadlocked over a new contract that would all but keep the player on Tyneside for the rest of his career.

At 27, this could be the last big-money deal on offer before his playing days start winding down. Joelinton arrived at Newcastle as a club-record signing and was immediately given the No.9 shirt.

It took two years, 82 Premier League games and a managerial sacking before the Magpies raised his best position. Eddie Howe was the man who transformed the Brazilian from a misfiring striker to one of the most destructive midfielders in English football.

In truth, Joelinton has a lot to thank Howe for – namely saving his career at the highest level. The now-reformed midfielder has gone on to become a Brazil international and a fans’ favourite at St James’ Park.

However, Joelinton’s future is in doubt as Newcastle struggle to agree a new deal. His current contract has 15 months remaining and The Telegraph claim Toon chiefs will place him on the transfer list if the situation is not resolved by June.

The player opened up about his desire to stay on Tyneside at the back end of last year. Joelinton said: “Yes, of course I want to stay. I feel at home here. My family feels at home, my son has friends here. I love the city. There have been talks. There’s nothing close yet but there’s been conversation and it’s a good start.”
