Ian Wright reacts when disputed footage of a West Ham United incident is shown on Match of the Day.

Ian Wright has spoken out over Luton Town’s late penalty call against West Ham United, arguing that the decision to not award a spot kick was justified.

On BBC Match Of The Day on Tuesday (2 September), footage was presented of the last seconds at Kenilworth Road on Saturday, when Hammers midfielder James Ward-Prowse made touch with the ball with his outstretched arm in Luton’s penalty area while the Hammers were under pressure to keep their 2-1 lead.

After a VAR review, no penalty was issued, infuriating home support. Wright claims that, while he did not believe it was a penalty, he would not have been surprised if it had been awarded given “some of the decisions” made by officials in the past.

“It probably would have been harsh,” Wright said on Match Of The Day, “but with the way referees are and what they do with VAR, I wouldn’t have been surprised if they gave it.”

“I would have been devastated if I were West Ham and they gave that to me.” However, you have seen some of the decisions that are being taken, and you could readily see that given.

“But, I don’t think that’s a pen, because it’s not far enough away.”

Late-night drama

After yet another defeat, Luton Town fans would have left their first Premier League home game dissatisfied. They would be doubly hurt that the late drama failed to punish them.

Mads Juel Andersen gave the Hatters late hope when he scored to make it 2-1. West Ham withstood a wave of pressure up until the final whistle and were lucky to escape with all three points despite their considerably better performance.

Luton fans will feel cheated because many easier judgments have been made, but Wright is correct in projecting West Ham’s possible rage at the decision.

David Moyes’ team dominated, with 61% possession and three shots on goal to Luton’s one. However, surrendering to late pressure is possible, and if the Hammers had faced a superior opponent, they may have blown a three-point lead. [SofaScore]

For the time being, West Ham will be pleased with their strong start to the season and much improved form from last season, but they may breathe a sigh of relief following this incident.
