After receiving a red card against Middlesbrough, Dan Neil’s manager Tony Mowbray indicated he was not upset with the midfielder.
After Dan Neil received a second caution against Middlesbrough just before halftime, Tony Mowbray declared he had nothing but praise for the midfielder.
When the referee failed to call a foul for a challenge on Jack Clarke, Neil made a gesture before cursing angrily. Neil, according to Mowbray, did not curse at the referee.
The head coach of Sunderland criticized the referees for not handling the issue more effectively and for their inconsistent decision-making, particularly in the first half.
In the second half, Middlesbrough made the most of the additional man, scoring four goals on a humiliating afternoon for the Black Cats. After the intermission, Sam Greenwood and Matt Crooks scored fast, and Isaiah Jones and Marcus Forss added the third and fourth goals.
Regarding the Neil ruling, Mowbray remarked, “I don’t comprehend the logic of it.
“I thought it was absurd that the manager said he would handle the game sympathetically at the meeting before the game, which I have to attend. He gives a red for gesturing during a local derby with 45,000 spectators.
You could tell they were a good team in the second half, as I had predicted. They play well with the ball, far superior to many of the teams we’ve encountered this year. It’s challenging, they’re a terrific team, and they choose the appropriate pass in that circumstance.
“The first half of the game was pretty terrific; I believe we had just about the best moments. We had a good feeling.
Dan, a local lad who understands the rivalry and importance of the game, is terribly disappointed in the locker room. His goal was to win, and in my opinion, the referee ruined the contest. Middlesbrough is a strong squad, and it was a good match in which both teams generated opportunities.
It’s a good game, and when the referee talks about empathy before the game, he does mention gesturing and not crowding the referee, but I don’t think there was any empathy in issuing a red card in the final second of the first half. He must stop him and exercise some compassion, right? ‘I’ll have to show you another yellow if you shout or gesticulate more,’ you should tell him. It’s a terrific game with two teams squaring off, and there are 45,000 spectators in the stadium. Where is the official management? I hope I’m not being too harsh; I’m simply disappointed because the first half was so excellent.
“I said to the fourth official, he halted it but hasn’t even spoken to the player, there was a booking for the pull back in the first five minutes. I simply know that he’s going to book something for so much less than that later on in the game, which is why I believe they got it incorrect. They have a strategy in mind when they enter the game, and in the first five minutes, they either try to manage it, let things go, or add their own flair.
He may have intended to approach it cautiously today and not be too strict with the bookings, but in the 44th minute, he books Dan for gesticulating. My opinion is that he ruined the spectacle, but Middlesbrough obviously doesn’t care because it’s wonderful for them.
“Dan informed me he watched it back, that it was an effing foul, and that he was standing 20 yards away. That young man is feeling that emotion during a local derby, and he isn’t cursing at the referee. I do it when I’m feeling emotional; I don’t swear much, but it can happen.
“These are football players, young men competing, aiming to win a neighborhood match. I have no idea if he lost the game’s context, as he appeared to have it during the pre-match meeting. I have nothing negative to say about Dan Neil. Dan is a lovely kid who doesn’t put his foot in it despite being competitive. He feels terrible about having let the squad down, but I don’t believe he has done much wrong. I don’t believe the choice was suitable given the circumstances of the game.
Niall Huggins was substituted midway through the first half with what appeared to be a muscular injury, which dealt Sunderland another blow in the contest.
After the game, Mowbray stated that he was unsure of the full scope of the problem.
