Rick Jeanneret, an NHL broadcasting legend, died Thursday due to “multi-organ failures,” the Buffalo Sabres announced. He called the team’s games for over 50 years.
Jeanneret, 81, celebrated his birthday on July 23 and passed away less than a month later. He battled with multiple organ failure for a couple of years. The Sabres released a statement disclosing the cause of death.
“It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, Rick Jeanneret, Hall of Fame broadcaster for the Buffalo Sabres,” the team said in a statement. “Rick died on August 17, 2023 with his family by his side after a two year battle with multi-organ failures. He will be loved forever.”
Jeanneret retired at the end of the 2021-22 NHL season. He called the Sabres games ever since their second year in the league in 1971.
He was inducted into the Sabres Hall of Fame in 2011, and into the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame and the Buffalo Broadcasting Hall of Fame one year later.
