UW Huskies stick at No. 5 in College Football Playoff rankings despite USC win
Through 10 weeks, there are five undefeated Power Five programs: Ohio State, Georgia, Michigan, Florida State and Washington.
In Tuesday’s College Football Playoff rankings, the 9-0 Huskies stayed put at No. 5.
UW sat directly behind No. 1 Ohio State (9-0), No. 2 Georgia (9-0), No. 3 Michigan (9-0) and No. 4 Florida State (9-0), despite Saturday’s 52-42 win at USC. After the rankings were revealed, ESPN’s Rece Davis said: “I think you can make a reasonable case for any of the top five that are undefeated. If you put any of them No. 1, I wouldn’t pound the table. I wouldn’t pound the table if Washington was No. 1. I really wouldn’t.”
When asked how the CFP selection committee evaluated the aforementioned programs, chair Boo Corrigan detailed the top four teams’ accomplishments, then added: “It’s a mixture of the resume and the football judgment, as we look at it. Washington’s in there as well with their big win at USC.”
And yet, Washington’s big win over No. 6 Oregon (8-1) — a 36-33 thriller inside Husky Stadium on Oct. 14 — seems to carry increasingly questionable weight.
“Washington … you give them all the credit for overcoming to win that game,” ESPN’s Booger McFarland said Tuesday night. “But Oregon was right there. I think if you watched that game, you say if the ball goes a different way, Oregon just might be a better team than Washington. So they’re getting credit for that.”
