Everton are still reeling from the shocking news that they were sanctioned in a way that no Premier League club has ever been before.
The uproar surrounding this case has been widespread, with many sections of the media and now even parliament debating the fairness of such a punishment after they were slapped with a ten-point deduction for their sole financial breach.
The Toffees have been open about their intention to appeal the decision, and they will now have an early opportunity to air their concerns when they meet with the other 19 Premier League clubs today.
While their deduction is unlikely to be at the top of the list of topics, they will almost certainly weigh in on a variety of key issues that affect them.
The Independent attempts to describe a “critical shareholders’ meeting.”
After all, a schism between the ‘big six’ and the rest of the division is expected, with the European Super League being mentioned once more as pressure mounts on those sides to contribute more money to the wider football pyramid.
A sense of shock regarding Everton’s punishment is also mentioned, while a renegotiation for the aforementioned deal will take place, which will be felt much more strongly by less financially stable sides.
Will Everton have the opportunity to appeal at today’s meeting?
Although it is a Premier League meeting, and the institution has been vocal in its desire to see the Merseyside club punished harshly, today will not be an opportunity for them to argue their case.
Everton must now present their case to another independent commission with a strong enough case to justify a lesser sentence, having already made public their intention to appeal the ten-point deduction.
Given that they only overspent by £19 million, there is certainly cause to argue that the sanction imposed was disproportionate to the actual crime.
As a result, today will be an opportunity to discuss finances and the distribution of wealth among the 20 clubs, as well as other critical issues such as the fairness of loans between clubs with the same ownership.
Everton’s battle will have to wait for another day.
