Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy was taken to the hospital after experiencing abdominal pain this morning.

He was diagnosed with acute appendicitis. He is slated for surgery Wednesday afternoon and is expected to be released later today.

The Dallas Cowboys said in a statement that McCarthy anticipates coaching on Sunday night when his team hosts the Eagles in a 7:20 p.m. showdown for first place in the NFC East.

The Cowboys’ three coordinators will run practice until McCarthy returns.

When the teams met last month, the Eagles beat the Cowboys, 28-23, in Philadelphia.
