Former Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard has warned Anthony Gordon he can’t afford to switch off at Newcastle United if he wants to be a success. The Magpies splashed the cash to sign the Toffees academy graduate in January last season, but he himself admitted he struggled to adapt to life under Eddie Howe.
Gordon was substituted against Brentford and he reacted angrily to Howe’s decision, but the new arrival has knuckled down since then. The 22-year-old enjoyed a brilliant summer with England’s Under-21s as they won the European Championship, with Gordon winning the Player of The Tournament gong.
The midfielder had just four days holiday before returning to pre-season training with the Magpies, with Gordon keen to make an impact this season. It’s been so far, so good from the England youth international who has been a standout performer in pre-season to date.
However, Howard felt Gordon faded out of the recent game against Chelsea, despite a bright start to the game. The Newcastle winger set up the Magpies’ equaliser for Miggy Almiron, who scored on a return to his former stomping ground.
“I think that’s a young player,” Howard said. “If you look at a seasoned veteran, they know that every time they get on the ball they’ve got to be sharp.
