Leicester City, competition for the promotion, suffered a setback after an injury to a summer signing.

Leeds United’s promotion rivals Leicester City have been dealt an injury blow to summer signing Conor Coady. Enzo Maresca watched his centre-back hobble off the pitch as the Foxes beat sister club OH Leuven in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Seagrave.

The injury meant Coady would miss Leicester’s pre-season tour of Asia, despite hopes he’d link up with the squad. The summer signing had been an ever present so far for the Championship side in pre-season.

Speaking after City played Thai side Port FC in a training exercise on Wednesday, Maresca told BBC Radio Leicester: “Unfortunately it is not good, we need to wait. They are scanning, we will see in the next few hours. He is one of our new players and has been involved with the process since day one.”

BBC reporter Owynn Palmer-Atkinson tweeted: “Conor Coady is having a scan on his foot that he injured against OHL. Enzo Maresca told me it is “not good” for Coady, but they will find out in the next few hours what the scan reveals and the extent of the problem.

Leicester do have a number of options at centre-half with Harry Souttar, Wout Faes, Jannik Vestergaard, youngster Ben Nelson, and new signing Callum Doyle all featuring in pre-season. Faes was one of three additional players to miss the Foxes’ clash with Port FC, with James Justin and Jamie Vardy also absent.

The latter of the trio was also absent from Leicester’s squad to face Tottenham Hotspur in the pre-season game that was cancelled. However, Maresca says Vardy is fine and back in training after picking up a small injury in the Leuven game last week.
