‘What a player, what a man’ – Liverpool squad react after 33 years old confirms transfer

Jordan Henderson announced his time at Liverpool was up, 12 years after signing for the club from Sunderland

Team-mates both past and present, plus club legends alike, Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has received a smattering of heartfelt goodbye messages following the announcement of his departure.

Speculation has been rife for weeks since rumours first broke of a £700k-per-week contract offer from Saudi Arabia. There was then a brief the negotiation period, and the 33-year-old ultimately left the Reds’ summer training camp after discussions with Jurgen Klopp to covertly complete a transfer to Al Ettifaq.

Well, with the exception of medical details being made public knowledge, images surfacing of his goodbye message being recorded at Anfield and finally a video depicting the midfielder training with his new squad before any official announcement.

Henderson finally took to Instagram with a personal statement on Wednesday evening, and it was an emotional one.

“I guess the thing I want to say most of all to you is simply thank you. Thank you for allowing me to have been part of your club. Thank you for your support through good times and bad. Thank you for all the sacrifices and commitments made, and will continue to make to follow us all over the world.

“Just know I will always be a Red until the day I die. Thank you for everything, You’ll Never Walk Alone. Jordan,” it ended.

The message brought and end to a successful 12-year career on Merseyside, eight of which were as captain. A number of current team-mates – most notably a number of Liverpool’s youngest talent – littered Instagram with responses to Henderson’s video.

Andy Robertson wrote: “Love you brother.”

Virgil van Dijk responded: “Captain, leader, legend.”

Alisson replied using only emojis, a tearful happy face followed by a heart.

Harvey Elliot and Cody Gakpo both said: “Thank you Captain.”

Stefan Bajcetic similarly stated: “Thank you for everything Captain.”

Thiago commented: “Good luck, Skipper!”

Caoimhin Kelleher responded: “Legend.”

Tyler Morton wrote: “Appreciate everything you’ve done for myself and the club thank you mate.”

Diogo Jota put down: “What a guy.”

Kostas Tsimikas also opted to use emojis, replying with three hearts.

Rhys Williams stated: “What a captain, player and person. Thank you for everything Hendo.”

Calvin Ramsay replied: “Legend, all the best mate!”

Curtis Jones said: “What a player, what a man!!! Thank you for everything captain.”

Sepp van den Berg commented: “Legend. All the best skip.”

Not only that, but a host of former team-mates wrote messages to the departing captain.

Former vice-captain James Milner put: “love it skip absolute legend.”

Dejan Lovren penned: “It was a privilege to play with you and share the locker room through good times and bad, there are few like you, we will only understand in a few years what a living legend you were in that red jersey. I will remember you as a fighter who never stopped running even when you couldn’t walk, you were a reliable captain and leader, stood behind our back countless times, so captain, Thank You from the bottom of my heart.”

Jamie Carragher replied: “Liverpool legend.”

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Pedro Chirivella both used one word: “Legend.”

Adam Lallana texted back a series of heart emojis.

Takumi Minamino wished: “All the best.”

Neco Williams responded: “All the best skip thank you.”

Divock Origi saluted: “All the best capi.”

Martin Skrtel wrote: “Thank you legend.”

Jay Spearing stated: “One word for this man… Legend.”

Finally, a number of club legends gave Henderson their well wishes.

Steven Gerrard – the man signing him for Al Ettifaq – used two heart emojis.

Robbie Fowler commented: “LFC Legend good luck.”

Jamie Redknapp similarly replied: “Legend. Good luck.”
