Nottingham Forest have swiftly turned down a fresh offer for Brennan Johnson from Brentford.
Forest continue to value the Wales international at around £50million ($64m) and the London club are yet to reach that level, with the latest offer understood to have been an initial £35m ($45m), with further potential add-ons attached to the deal.
Informal talks are understood to have taken place earlier this week between the forward, his advisors and head coach Steve Cooper, who continues to regard Johnson as being an integral part of his squad.
But there remains a lure to selling Johnson ahead of other saleable assets, because of his status as an academy product – as any fee would represent pure profit, which would have a positive impact on staying within financial fair play limits.
It is the second time Brentford have bid this summer, with a £30m offer having been rejected at the start of the window. This latest offer was also swiftly rejected.
Aston Villa had an interest earlier in the summer but that has waned following their £50million signing of Moussa Diaby from Bayer Leverkusen.
Tottenham are also understood to be monitoring Johnson’s situation carefully, but it is only Brentford who have put a significant offer on the table, with Thomas Frank remaining a big fan of the 22-year-old.
Johnson is currently sidelined with an ankle injury but is expected to return to training next week, as Forest continue their preparations for a second season in the top flight.
Forest spent £15m to sign Anthony Elanga from Manchester United and the winger made his debut against Leeds at Burton last night, where he produced a positive performance after coming off the bench.
