Leeds United are in need of a new striker signing, but Daniel Farke is going to have to make do for the time being, and this meeting with Hearts could see him experiment with Mateo Joseph.
A chance for Farke to start zeroing in on the side that will start for the first game of the season against Cardiff City in a weeks’ time, it also presents him with opportunities to find solutions to early problems in his squad
The lack of striker signing thus far, along with the different recent struggles in the number nine role for both Georginio Rutter and Patrick Bamford, means a new option could be explored.
Here, we look at two reasons why Farke needs to consider Mateo Joseph up front this weekend…
His ability to break lines
Without having much chance to see Mateo Joseph in a senior environment, you can see exactly what he could bring to the table for Leeds.
His speed makes him a real threat on the shoulder for the defence, giving him great chances to get in behind the opposition and create chances that way.
It seems almost too obvious at times what pace he’s got, when Leeds look to free the Spaniard on the break, with how quickly they aim to play him through, whether he’s drifted wide or on the shoulder.
Couple that with his quick feet and you have a player that can burst through in the blink of an eye, and it’s so hard to track.
Should Leeds sign Joel Piroe?
Ruthlessness in front of goal
Championship football is a different kettle of fish compared to the PL2 setup that Joseph made look easy each game when he played for the under-21s.
However, he has shown the quality in the way he dispatches his efforts that he’s a natural finisher, striking the ball cleanly with power.
He scored last pre-season against Blackpool, taking the one chance that fell his way, and you’d back him to be in such a mood if he’s handed an appearance on Sunday.
