Report: Eddie Howe may miss out 2020 target

A transfer target that Newcastle United have chased for years has agreed to a move to another club.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano on his Twitter page, Wolfsburg have reached an agreement with Sassuolo to sign Rogerio. The Brazilian is a player that Newcastle have tracked for many years.

The Magpies were credited with interest in 2020, when they pursued a £12.5 million move for the left-back. Ultimately, they didn’t get their man, and Jamal Lewis arrived on Tyneside in the meantime.

Things haven’t particularly worked out at Newcastle for Lewis so far, and the defender recently joined Championship side Watford on a season-long loan deal, with an option to buy included.

Newcastle considered making a move for Rogerio again in June, as reported by Calciomercato, with Borussia Dortmund also sniffing around the 25-year-old at the time. However, Rogerio now looks set for the Bundesliga, but to join Wolfsburg, barring an extraordinary late intervention.

Given that Newcastle are in the market for a left-back, and have considered Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney, they may come to regret having not pushed harder to sign Rogerio whilst he was still available.

Rogerio would have offered something different

The former Brazil under-23 international would have been an interesting option for Eddie Howe to have at his disposal. The 5’10” ace is a very attacking left-back, and he would have been a marauding presence on the left-flank for the Magpies. Rogerio is a far cry from the style of play offered by Dan Burn in that position.

Despite still having his best years ahead of him, Rogerio would also have brought plenty of top level experience with him to Newcastle. He has been a regular for Sassuolo since 2017, and has amassed almost 150 Serie A appearances for the club.

Newcastle will likely keep tabs on Rogerio in Germany. Having tracked him for so long, he may well still be considered a long-term target for the club despite this move.
