‘Big changes’ – Virgil van Dijk sends blunt warning to Liverpool team-mates after Bayern Munich loss

Virgil van Dijk insists Liverpool still have “work to do” ahead of their Premier League opener against Chelsea next weekend.

The 32-year-old, who was appointed Liverpool captain last week, was on the scoresheet at the Singapore National Stadium as the Reds fell to a 4-3 defeat to Bayern Munich.

But despite racing into an early two-goal lead after the defender added to Cody Gakpo’s second-minute strike and then leading once more after Luis Diaz’s venomous effort just after the hour mark, goals from Serge Gnabry, Leroy Sane, Frans Kratzig and Josip Stanisic handed the Bundesliga champions a late victory.

Of the four goals Liverpool conceded on Wednesday, the first-half strikes from Gnabry and Sane were examined forensically after Thomas Tuchel’s side played through Liverpool’s lines all too easily.

Speaking to LFCTV after the game, Van Dijk admitted there is still plenty of work for his side to do ahead of next weekend’s Premier League opener.

“So many good things and things we have to improve,” said Van Dijk. “They are a very good opponent and they punish you if you are not on it for a split second – that is what happened today. [There’s] still work to do – and that is what we are going to do.
