Report; West Ham United have reached an agreement on personal terms.

West Ham have “reached an agreement” with Ajax’s Edson Alvarez on personal

The transfer specialist Italian journalist reported via Twitter on Friday night (4 August) that the Mexican midfielder had “said yes” to the Hammers, with further discussions between the sides expected over the weekend.

Alvarez was reportedly subject of a £43million bid from the London Stadium [Diario de Morelos, 28 July] as the Irons look to finally fill the gap left after Declan Rice was sold to Arsenal.

Romano reported: “EXCL: West Ham have now reached an agreement on personal terms with Ajax midfielder Édson Álvarez.

“Up to West Ham to discuss the deal with Ajax as negotiations will follow over the weekend.

“Deal depends on clubs, Édson said yes.”

Breakthrough

The 25-year-old could finally be the answer that West Ham need in the centre of midfield, with Alvarez possessing a host of experience in the Champions League and at international level.

With 69 caps and two Eredivisie titles to his name it would help to lift the considerable gloom that has descended onto the Irons’ transfer window if they can get this move over the line.

It would also suggest that Tim Steidten is getting his way in his dispute with David Moyes over domestic vs overseas transfer targets, with the Ajax player not possessing the Premier League experience the manager is believed to be prioritising this summer.

But after coming close to a move to Chelsea a year ago, and with the London rivals again interested this summer [Times, 1 August], it would appear to be a very solid move if West Ham get this one done.

Time is rapidly running out as both the start of the new Premier League season and the close of the transfer window approaching, so it is about time that a breakthrough is made.

Numerous approaches have ground to a halt so far this summer, so the club will need to decisively change that in their upcoming talks with Ajax.

If Alvarez can be the first signing of the summer it would be a welcome, if highly belated, starting point, and fans will be desperately hoping he is the first of many in the time remaining.
