‘Very frustrating’ verdict, West Ham United problem

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie says the current transfer situation at West Ham is “very frustrating,” with “something not right” behind the scenes.

The pundit was alluding to the issue between manager David Moyes and new technical director Tim Steidten, with the duo unable to agree on transfers at the London Stadium.

There is, however, a potential breakthrough in this regard, with West Ham now “closer than ever” to signing Manchester United duo Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay, according to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon (4 August).

Nixon has reported that the Red Devils pair are undergoing “long-distance medicals” as they edge closer to moves to the East London club.

Despite this news, the Daily Mail added on Friday that Moyes could be sacked by the Hammers as tensions behind the scenes reach boiling point.

Former Hammers man McAvennie is unsure who is at fault in the transfer breakdowns but has urged the club to listen to the manager for the current window, before allowing Steidten to take control in future windows.

Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “He’s been given money to buy players, but not one player has come through the door. You couldn’t make that up. That’s what he gets paid for.

“And every time he tries to buy a player, the manager says no, or David Sullivan says no. If you’ve not bought players by now, there’s something not right, there are problems behind the scenes.

“I don’t know who is at fault, but if you’ve brought somebody in and you’re paying him good money to go and buy players, and he hasn’t brought anyone in yet – the only team in the Premier League who hasn’t bought yet – then there is something not right there.

“Hopefully they can sort it out. The manager is the manager, he should go and get the players he wants. Maybe next year we’ll bring in players that Steidten is looking at, but now we can get the ones Moyes wants.

“It’s very frustrating. I feel sorry for the supporters, who had such a high, and then now it’s same old, same old.”
