James Garner did not enjoy the best start to his Everton career after joining from Manchester United last summer.

Struggles with injury and form initially meant he was on the periphery of the first team after being signed by former boss Frank Lampard.

But by the end of the campaign, Garner was arguably among the most important performers as the Toffees just about staved off relegation under Sean Dyche.

The reason Garner became so key was due to his versatility and ability to perform in a variety of positions, most noticeably filling in at right back when injuries to Seamus Coleman and Nathan Patterson forced Dyche’s hand.

With the Premier League season beginning against next week, Garner may once again be needed to solve a headache for Dyce.

Dwight McNeil limped off injured in a pre-season friendly against Stoke City and loan signing Arnaut Danjuma picked up a knock in training this week.

The Liverpool Echo wrote online on Sunday (6 August) that Dyche may now have dropped a selection hint for when the Premier League begins next week, with the Toffees starting at home to Fulham on Saturday August 12.

Garner was utilised on the right-hand side of midfield against Sporting CP in their final tune-up game and did a capable job to put himself firmly in the frame to get a starting shirt.

In truth, Garner deserves the opportunity to play and his willingness to do a job for a team, even away from his favoured central midfield position, is something that will be greatly appreciated by Dyche.

There is optimism at Goodison Park that, after two years of struggle, the Toffees can climb up the table this term.

And Garner is showing his worth to play a big part at Goodison Park this season.
