‘He’s absolutely incredible,’ says Sean Longstaff, who is concerned about Newcastle’s star player.

‘He’s just unbelievable’: Sean Longstaff admits he’s worried about how good Newcastle player is

Sean Longstaff has extra competition at Newcastle United this season, and it is not just from £55million signing Sandro Tonali.

The local lad proved to be a key player for the Magpies last season, despite starting the campaign massively out of favour. It did not look like he would have a major role, but an injury to Bruno Guimaraes handed him an opportunity.

Longstaff eventually took it, and ended up being a mainstay in Eddie Howe’s midfield. You noticed when he was not there, and that was not a good thing.

He did really well to become a regular starter, but Longstaff is going to have another fight on his hands this season.

The big money arrival of Tonali is a threat to Longstaff’s place in the side, while there is also an emerging threat from the academy in the shape of Lewis Miley.

Sean Longstaff blown away by ‘unbelievable’ Lewis Miley

Longstaff has spoke to the Chronicle about Newcastle’s strength in depth in midfield, and admitted he is just as concerned about competition from Miley as he is Tonali.

“Yeah, I’m just as worried about Lewis!,” he said.

“But whenever you bring in better players, you get to see where you are.”

Longstaff added: “I think Lew who plays more in my position, honestly he is just unbelievable.

“He came with us to Saudi and I remember thinking he was 16 at the time and unbelievable how good he is. He came back and I remember texting him in the summer saying just make sure you come back fit and ready to go.

“He said ‘I will do’ and I could wax lyrical about him all day. I just think Lew is one of the best I have seen from the Academy in a long time. It is just a pity he is in my position!”

Longstaff will hope to rise to the challenge at Newcastle once again

Fans never would have expected Longstaff to become such an important player under Howe. Even towards the back end of the 2021/22 season, there were doubts.

But the 25-year-old really proved his worth last season, becoming one of Newcastle’s unsung heroes.

He has clearly improved playing alongside better players like Bruno, which is why he will probably welcome the arrival of Tonali.

And in Miley, Longstaff is perfectly placed to help his transition from youth football to senior. He came through the academy himself, and dealt with the pressures that came with it. There was a lot of hype when Longstaff burst onto the scene, and it has taken him a long time to get back to that level.

The hype is even bigger with Miley, and it is easy to see why. He already looks a class act, which is why Longstaff is worried! His place is under threat from a £55million Italy international and one of the most talented 17-year-old’s you will ever see.
