Newcastle United injury update after 400-day absence as Newcastle squad number revealed

Newcastle United supporters are hopeful over Tino Livramento’s recent injury recovery

Newcastle United new boy Tino Livramento has sought to calm the nerves over his recent knee injury that kept him sidelined for over a year. The right-back, 20, enjoyed a tremendous debut season at Southampton before suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in April 2022.

Livramento was stretchered off the pitch while taking in oxygen after the injury, before initially planning his return for early 2023. A hamstring setback in the winter cost him another four months on the sidelines before an eventual return to the under-21 side after 355 days and a return to the senior side after just shy of 400 days.Newcastle United - Newcastle United sign Valentino Livramento

Newcastle fans are hopeful Livramento is over such a devastating blow as he prepares for life on Tyneside. The £31m signing believes he is back to his best physically and has grown mentally too.

“It was very tough,” Livramento told Newcastle’s media channels after his move was announced. “I had a really good season breaking through [at Southampton] then had to recover last season. It was a learning point for me.

“I got to work on different aspects of myself. I’m feeling really good now and I feel like I’m past where I was. It allowed me to mentally overcome a lot of things.

“I can’t thank Southampton’s medical staff enough for what they done and how they treated me. I wouldn’t be in this position without their hard work.”

Southampton released a touching farewell statement to mark Livramento’s exit but some of the St Mary’s faithful were unhappy with the timing of the departure given all the help afforded to the player during his rehabilitation period. For Livramento, the focus now is simply on fighting his way into Eddie Howe’s plans at St James’ Park.

Livramento took part in his first Newcastle training session on Wednesday, wearing the number 21 which was his squad number at Southampton.
