‘Delighted’ – Crystal Palace boss wonderful verdict and reactions to Premier League opening day win at Sheffield United

Crystal Palace got off to a winning start in their first game of the 2023-24 Premier League season after a 1-0 win at newly-promoted Sheffield United.

The Eagles went ahead in the 49th minute through Odsonne Edouard.

Jordan Ayew drove down the right-hand touchline and drilled a cross along the face of goal for the the former Celtic forward to tap past Wes Foderingham.

The French forward thought he had scored his second in the 70th minute when he met Tyrick Mitchell’s low cross at the back post. However, Edouard was flagged for offside after putting the ball into the back of the net.

Palace had 68 per cent possession, recorded 24 shots – eight on target – and had two goals ruled out for offside.

“I’m happy with the start and the points,” said Hodgson.

“It’s never easy to come to Bramall Lane and to take points, especially against a side celebrating their return to the Premier League.

“We knew we would be in for a tough game. But we handled that situation well and I was delighted that we were able to come out with the three points and to win the game.”

Edouard, 25, scored five goals last season in the Premier League for the Eagles.

“His performance throughout the game was really good in every respect,” added Hodgson.

“He held the ball up for us and was a target for us when we wanted to play the ball forward. He was dangerous when we wanted to play the ball into the penalty area.

“He had a very good game.”
