‘Could ruin his career’: Sam Allardyce says £25m Everton target is making a massive mistake

Sam Allardyce is not convinced by Wilfried Gnonto’s attempts to leave Leeds United.

Speaking on his No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, the former Everton manager admitted that the winger could be ‘ruining his career’ by refusing to play for the Whites.

Gnonto has been heavily linked with a move to Goodison Park all summer, but the switch looked unlikely when he started in Leeds’ 2-2 draw with Cardiff City in their Championship opener.

However, the Italian hasn’t played for the club since after making himself unavailable in order to force through a move to Merseyside.

Gnonto remains absent from first-team training at Thorp Arch, while Leeds United have insisted that he is not for sale and are hopeful he will remain in Yorkshire beyond transfer deadline day.

With Everton now appearing to look at alternatives in the likes of Johan Bakayoko and Goncalo Borges, it could spell bad news for Gnonto if he fails to secure an exit over the next couple of weeks.

Wilfried Gnonto may have ‘ruined his career’

Allardyce has been left very concerned by the forward’s situation, having spent the final month of Leeds United’s three-year stint in the Premier League at the helm.

“I think that is guided by his agent. I think his agent has told him to do that,” Allardyce said.

“I can’t see it from the short time that I was there that he would say ‘I’m not going to play’. I think his agent has said that his best chance of getting away is by not turning up.

“His agent has to be 100% certain he’s got a club for him to go to, because if he’s taking the chance of doing that without a club to go to it could ruin his career, not totally, but it would set him back so far that it would be very difficult.”
