Enzo Maresca insistent over five Leicester City players as he gives transfer update

Players that were left out against Huddersfield could yet come back into the manager’s plans to face Cardiff on Saturday afternoon, despite not yet having played a single minute

Previously-omitted Leicester City players are still under consideration for selection, manager Enzo Maresca has insisted, despite choosing to have two substitute goalkeepers last time out.

Maresca selected Danny Ward and Daniel Iversen on his bench for the win at Huddersfield, opting to double up on back-up goalkeepers rather than select any of five fit senior players available, with Timothy Castagne, Harry Souttar, Victor Kristiansen, Boubakary Soumare, and Patson Daka left at home.

After the win in West Yorkshire, Maresca said transfer speculation was partly behind his decision, and that he felt it was better for those players to be left out. But despite none of the five yet playing a single minute in any of the three competitive games, the Italian said he would consider them for selection against Cardiff.

Asked if their heads weren’t in the right place to play for City, Maresca said at his press conference on Friday: “No, I don’t think this. For some of them it was a technical decision and for some of them because there are some noises so it was probably better for them to stay at home.

“It doesn’t mean they will stay at home again. We’ll see. It depends how they are. If they are fit, we’ll take the decision.”

Nevertheless, for some of those players, the writing is on the wall. Maresca says he has spoken to those who are not in his plans, but adds that they would have known their standing anyway.
