Leeds United may need to forget stern – View

Leeds United have been very strict with their stance on Willy Gnonto leaving this season, as Everton have tabled an offer reportedly amounting to £25million.

Leeds haven’t really done a great deal that they needed to in the month of August with incoming signings, but they have certainly been busy.

The main talking point of the month so far has been Willy Gnonto’s refusal to play amid interest from Everton, with the club sharing a statement underlining that he is not for sale.

Since then, Sky Sports (16/8, 3.38pm) have reported that the Toffees have tabled an offer that amounts to £25million with add-ons included, plus a sell-on clause too.

Here, we look at two reasons why Leeds might have to go back on their bold Gnonto stance to actually sell him this month…

That money needs to be reinvested

It’s abundantly clear to everyone, including Daniel Farke, that this squad needs more than a few signings before the window shuts.

Thanks to the exceptional work done by the previous regime, the outgoings sealed thus far have brought the club virtually no money to reinvest, so a high-profile sale or two are needed – we already have one sorted with £23million coming from Bournemouth for Tyler Adams.

That money does allow us to bring in three or four quality signings of the same calibre as Ethan Ampadu, but more than three or four signings are required.

Should Leeds get £25million from Everton, that helps us bring in a brilliant striker and replace Gnonto with an attacking midfielder too.

Should Leeds cash in on Gnonto?

Can we get £25m worth of output from him?

Another question mark around Gnonto is on whether Leeds can actually bring the best out of him from hereon.

Farke managed Emi Buendia in a similar situation very well at Norwich, so there should be optimism that he’s the right man to get a tune out of the Italian if this saga fizzles out.

However, can we rely on the German to perform a miraculous turnaround twice?

It’s hard to see Gnonto getting into peak form after such a shocking turn of events, where the fans have made their feelings known to him.

If £25million is sitting there, perhaps Leeds are better off having the money than a hypothetical asset that might not play to full potential.
