Sunderland are set to be without a number of first-team players for their trip to Championship rivals Coventry City this weekend, according to a report from Chronicle Live journalist James Hunter.
Black Cats boss Tony Mowbray remains under severe pressure at the Stadium Of Light and will be in need of a result against the Skyblues, despite Jobe Bellingham’s double giving Sunderland a 2-1 win against Rotherham United on Saturday.
Who is out injured?
Beginning with the club’s long-term absentees, midfielder Corry Evans and forward Ross Stewart remain on the sidelines. However, the club have several players who are out with short-term injuries, which could lead to them missing Saturday’s trip to Coventry.
Winger Patrick Roberts limped off after 13 minutes, during Saturday’s victory against Rotherham, but the severity of his injury is yet to be revealed. Similarly, youngster Chris Rigg missed Saturday’s match after sustaining a concussion and is currently expected to miss the match, unless he trains later this week. Midfielder Elliot Embleton is also sidelined after sustaining an ankle injury in December, but is back in light training and expected to miss Saturday’s trip.
Summer signings Jenson Seelt and Eliezer Mayenda are also out injured with short-term setbacks, but whether they make the trip on Saturday remains to be seen.
A man under pressure
Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray has been under huge pressure since the club’s play-off semi-final defeat to Luton Town, which wasn’t helped by the club’s disappointing start to the campaign. The Black Cats suffered an opening weekend loss to Ipswich Town, before losing to Preston North End as well as being knocked out of the EFL Cup by League Two side Crewe Alexandra.

Despite Sunderland having several injuries, their squad will still be strong heading into their clash with Coventry City this weekend. However, Coventry have had a busy summer, landing ten new signings so far and they will cause Sunderland problems, which is why Tony Mowbray will be keen to have as many players as fit as possible.
