Again, Leeds United bid for Tottenham star player

Leeds United have made an enquiry to Tottenham about a deal for Djed Spence before the window shuts, according to Paul O Keefe.

The agent with strong Spurs connections reported via Twitter on Friday 25 August that the Whites are “willing to consider all options” around a deal, while Spence himself, 23, is also looking at options “including abroad”.

The England under-21 international has only made six brief appearances since moving to north London from Nottingham Forest last summer, and spent the second half of last season in Ligue 1 with Rennes, featuring 10 times.

Daniel Farke has been attempting to strengthen further at right back this summer, despite bringing in Sam Byram on a free transfer, and got as far as the start of a medical at Thorp Arch with former Norwich favourite Max Aarons before the deal was hijacked by Bournemouth.

The manager has already brought in fellow Spurs defender Joe Rodon on loan.

Suddenly, the end of the transfer window is threatening to make up for a lot of the misery that went before it, and providing Spence with a route back from the wilderness would fit into that well.

After the big-money capture of Joel Piroe there is finally some major intent being shown, as promised, by the new 49ers regime, and with Willy Gnonto and Luis Sinisterra both possible back in the fold from now on the attack has been boosted in a big way.

It had been starting to look like picking up forgotten men from the Premier League on loan might be the only way Farke was going to have his squad strengthened in the final week of the window, but serious money has now been spent.

And with potential moves Nadiem Amiri and Joseph Paintsil currently in the offing it looks like there is more outlay to come, with the long-mooted Glen Kamara deal also yet to be completed.

As with Piroe, Spence is a proven performer at Championship level having been a stand-out in Steve Cooper’s promotion side at Forest to secure his move to Tottenham, so he makes plenty of sense to target.

He appears to have lost his way at the Premier League side and clearly needs regular football, so if a deal can be done there is every reason to see it as a sensible option for Leeds United and the right-back.

Nobody can question Luke Ayling’s commitment but in terms of on-pitch quality Spence would surely be seen as an upgrade.

What the continued interest in bringing in a notable signing at right-back means for Cody Drameh’s future is much less clear, and it could be argued that the club has a ready-made second-tier option right in front of them.

But if Farke isn’t ready to rely on the 21-year-old then Spence could be a fine replacement option, even if it might be an unnecessary switch.

In other Leeds United news, another loan exit could still be on the cards before the close of the window with developments expected.
