Crystal Palace star hits out at club after ‘refusing to play’ for Eagles

Vicente Guaita has slammed his current club Crystal Palace on social media – after the Argentine shot-stopper reportedly refused to play in pre-season for the Eagles

Crystal Palace star Vicente Guaita has hit out at the club after he ‘refused to play’ during pre-season.

Guaita, 36, reportedly wants to leave Selhurst Park after the goalkeeper lost his place to Sam Johnstone, and he then ‘refused’ to play in pre-season. As a result, Guaita has seemingly been dropped by Roy Hodgson, with Remi Matthews selected on the bench for the Eagles’ first game of the Premier League season against Sheffield United.

Vicente Guaita is unhappy with Crystal Palace

The Argentine fumed on social media: “Where is my name? So how can I play for Palace?” Hodgson had already explained in the week: “[Johnstone] is the only choice at the moment because Guaita is disenchanted with the club and has said he would like to move on.

“He’s refused to play in our games so far. A complication is that he has a year’s contract.

“It’s up to the club to decide, not him. He’s made it clear to everybody he doesn’t want to be here and compete with Sam Johnstone.

“I can’t physically make Guaita play but it’s not certain the club will accept his refusal to play and they’ll let him go.”

Guaita has played over 150 games for Palace, and he even signed a contract extension in January to keep at the club until the summer of 2024.

Palace kicked off their Premier League campaign on Saturday afternoon as Hodgson’s side travelled to South Yorkshire, where they played a newly promoted Sheffield United.
