We’re delighted to welcome Aston Villa podcaster Ty Bracey as our exclusive Aston Villa columnist each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the club…
Cameron Archer’s move to Sheffield United was the “best course of action” if he did not fit into Unai Emery’s plans this season while also being financially “smart”, according to Ty Bracey.
The 21-year-old made the switch to the Blades for £18million off the back of a quality 11-goal-loan spell in the Championship with Middlesbrough last season, but Aston Villa retained a buy-back option for the England youth international.
Many Villa fans questioned the move and believed the youngster would have a good opportunity to earn decent minutes under Emery in European and domestic Cup competitions.

However, Bracey has backed the sale if it was sanctioned by Emery while also noting the Financial Fair Play implications of the high-value sale. While Archer may feel despondent about not fitting into Emery’s immediate plans, Bracey is “confident” that the pair would have had discussions about his Villa future prior to the move.
Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bracey said: “Archer didn’t have an amazing pre-season but he wasn’t riddled with opportunity. I would have liked to see him feature a bit more but he’d have been playing third fiddle behind Jhon Duran and Ollie Watkins.
“I believe in Unai Emery, and if Unai Emery thinks that that’s the best course of business for us then so be it. A lot of it is linked to Financial Fair Play. If they were to send him on loan, we might as well get a fee for him, a decent fee.
“If he decides to come back then fair enough. If he’s good enough and hits that level where he can come back, then I’m absolutely all for it.
“We don’t hear the conversations that go on off the record. Emery definitely would have had a conversation with him and let Archer know where he is in their plans. I’m confident Emery would have had that conversation.
“Archer will know where he stands. But I get it from the player’s point of view: ‘If you don’t want me now, why would you want me in the future?’ But, again, it all boils down to Emery and if FFP’s playing a massive part too.
“We have to be sensible and we can’t keep spending and spending. We have to claw back some money that we’re spending. We’re smart with our business.”
