Everton squandered a huge opportunity by neglecting to pursue a ‘ambitious’ Champions league medalist.

Kalvin Phillips was considered for a late loan move by Everton.

Everton considered making a “ambitious” deadline day bid for Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips, according to iNews.

However, such a plan never materialized. Phillips is still playing a little role at the Etihad Stadium. A departure from Manchester City this summer would have been a significant boost to the 27-year-old’s career.

Phillips would have been an excellent addition to Everton’s roster as well. The 27-cap England international would have added skill, toughness, and defensive tenacity to the Toffees’ midfield.

Phillips had the potential to address Everton’s midfield dilemma.

Sean Dyche’s priority this summer was to improve Everton’s attack. Beto has been brought in to lead the line, with goals expected from Arnaut Danjuma, Jack Harrison, and Youssef Chermiti.

There is, however, a compelling case to be made that more could have been done to improve the club’s midfield alternatives. Everton have battled to get control of games this season, and have far too often failed to snuff out opposition counter-attacks. This is due to a lack of midfield quality and tactical discipline. They also lack depth in this department.

Amadou Onana has been unreliable, and Idrissa Gueye has struggled to make an impression this season. If Phillips had been brought in, he would have undoubtedly become a lynchpin in the Merseyside club’s midfield. Regular game time will also help him keep his position in the England squad in the long run.

Everton may have been able to afford a loan deal, and Manchester City will not have been concerned about strengthening a direct Premier League championship opponent by allowing Phillips to move to Goodison Park.

Everton may come to regret not pushing harder for Phillips to join the club.
