Michael Ball delivers a scathing assessment on Demarai Gray’s departure amid the current Everton happenings.

Demarai Gray, according to Michael Ball, believes he is better than he is and is not good enough to carry the rest of the Everton group.

On Sunday [3 September], the Jamaica international took to social media to criticize manager Sean Dyche after the club vetoed a move to Al-Ettifaq [Ben Jacobs].

Gray’s future is unknown as the transfer window closes for Saudi Arabian teams on Thursday [7 September], but Ball would not be surprised to see the winger go.

In his column for the Liverpool Echo [5 September], Ball remarked of the situation, “He’s daft to do it, but I also don’t agree with how we’ve been with him.”

“He probably thinks he’s better than he is.” He’s not your usual Sean Dyche player, but these outliers are the ones who win or lose games – they’ve got that something special.

“That’s what Gray brings to us, as he did last season at Wolves.” He came on, beat opponents, took shots, and was ultimately instrumental in Yerry Mina’s late goal. He’s going to try something new.

“Unfortunately, he lacks the work rate required to play in a Dyche team, and I don’t believe he’s good enough to carry.” He hasn’t been consistent or good enough to carry his teammates – he’s no James Rodriguez.”

Everton is in command.

Gray’s predicament is far from ideal for Dyche or anyone associated with Everton.

While the former Leicester City star may be keen to leave, Everton is in desperate need of attacking cover and is unable to bring in replacements.

As we approach the Saudi deadline, the ball is ultimately in Everton’s court.

They will not want to keep a disgruntled player at Goodison Park, but they will also not make themselves weaker in attack to appease someone who appears to prefer to be elsewhere.

If the deadline passes without Gray leaving, Dyche will meet with the 27-year-old at Finch Farm next week to discuss any differences.

Gray might still play a significant role for Everton this season.
