Arnaut Danjuma scored his first Premier League goal for Everton last weekend against Sheffield United.
Everton earned their first Premier League point of the season on Saturday, drawing 2-2 with Sheffield United. Both Abdoulaye Doucoure and Arnaut Danjuma scored for the Toffees.
Danjuma’s second goal for Everton after joining the Merseyside club on loan this summer. His first came as the game-winning goal in the EFL Cup against Doncaster Rovers.
Everton have recently struggled to score goals. They failed to score in either of their first three Premier League games this season, and Sean Dyche spent the most of the summer trying to enhance his squad’s attacking component. Danjuma was joined at Goodison Park by forwards Beto and Youssef Chermiti, as well as Jack Harrison, with this goal in mind.
Dyche and Everton fans will be hopeful that Danjuma can now go on a prolific run in front of goal.
If he does, expect plenty more of the Dutchman’s signature ‘Cobra’ celebration.
As he celebrated his strike against the Blades, the 26-year-old demonstrated the ‘Cobra’. He performs the celebration by crooking his arm and pointing his hand downward, resembling a serpent rearing up from the ground.
The Cobra’s Story
Danjuma explained the significance of the celebration to the official Premier League Twitter account. “The reason for my celebration dates back to my childhood,” he explained. I still hang out with the same set of pals I used to play five-a-side with when we were younger.”
“One of my friends was dubbed ‘The Cobra’ because of the way he played football.
They’re still all together and very supportive; they’re constantly in the stadium, they’ve always supported my profession, and they’re a part of me.”
“We’re still together, and it’s my way of saying thank you to them as part of that.” The Cobra [celebration] is for my buddies, who were and still remain with me.”
Dyche will be hoping to see a lot more of Danjuma’s Cobra this season. The 6-cap Netherlands international has the potential to be a star for the Toffees, and if he can find his best form, he might propel Everton out of relegation jeopardy. He does, however, have a point to prove in the Premier League, having struggled to shine for Bournemouth and Tottenham Hotspur in his previous two seasons.
