An acknowledgment concerning the Whites was made by a Swansea City executive in response to Joel Piroe’s transfer to Leeds United.
Piroe, a Dutch striker, joined Swansea from PSV Eindhoven for a reported £1 million, which increased to £2 million in the summer of 2021. Over the course of the next two seasons, the attacker scored 46 goals in 96 games. Paul Watson, the club’s sporting director, acknowledged to Wales Online that his team wanted to keep Piroe but that Piroe ended up signing with Leeds last month for a sum in excess of £10 million. Watson acknowledges, however, that when the Whites made their offer, his team eventually was unable to compete with a team like Leeds and their parachute payouts.
Joel and I had numerous discussions, claimed Watson. Many players have been the subject of my chats. I’ve made it clear that I’ll do two things: I’ll be honest and fair.
The goal was to attempt to keep Joel, but the football club’s structure didn’t allow for what he and his representatives wanted.
“We believed the ripple effect would prevent us from destroying that structure. Along with that, an offer was received. We had an internal valuation, and in some contingents, it was surpassed.
“When you are getting a return on an investment, he said he wasn’t going to sign a new contract and you can’t compete with a club who has parachute payments, that all came to a point where you say what do we do, we get the best for the football club,” the person said. We can acquire something that we can later reinvest in and strengthen over time.
