Leeds United icon makes surprising managerial comeback 15 months after being fired from the Championship.

Despite keeping Birmingham City in the Championship, Lee Bowyer was fired as manager in July of last year.

Former Leeds United player Lee Bowyer has raised eyebrows by taking over as manager of the Montserrat national side.

Over a year after being fired by Birmingham City, the 46-year-old is back in the game and is off to a winning start with a 3-2 victory over Barbados. Bowyer was fired at St Andrew’s after keeping the club afloat for two seasons on a shoestring budget, although he voiced a desire to return to management early this year.

“I’ve been out to my lake in France doing a bit of maintenance,” he explained to talkSPORT. “On the football front, I’m waiting.” I’m looking for the ideal employment because I love football and enjoy sharing my knowledge.

“I’ve worked with top players, against top players, and with top managers.” I’ve learned a lot and want to continue passing it on and helping players.”

Small island nation Montserrat has a population of only 4,300 people and its football team was featured in the 2003 film The Other Final. Based on a true incident, the film depicts Montserrat’s match against Bhutan, the world’s two lowest-ranked teams, which took place on the same day as the 2002 World Cup Cup. The Caribbean team was thrashed 4-0.

Fast forward to the present, and in true Bowyer flair, his first game as head coach was plenty of drama. The Emerald Boys took an early lead thanks to Lyle Taylor, who coincidentally played under Bowyer at Birmingham, before falling behind 2-1 at halftime.

A late own goal leveled the game before Taylor scored again in the 97th minute to give Bowyer his first win. Montserrat hung on for three points to take joint first place in the CONCACAF Nations League’s League B, Group B.
