Due to an injury setback, the 23-year-old centre-back missed his country’s 4-2 defeat in Slovenia three days earlier, but he played 90 minutes against Kazakhstan at the Astana Arena.

Trai Hume, of Sunderland, also began the game, gaining his sixth international cap.

Ballard injured his ankle in Sunderland’s 5-0 win over Southampton before the international break and returned to Wearside to be evaluated while Northern Ireland traveled to Slovenia.
