Despite the fact that Sunderland’s contract was extended, Tony Mowbray’s future is uncertain.

Sources: Sunderland considering brutal Tony Mowbray sack, as three replacements emerge

Despite their fight for promotion to the Premier League, Sunderland are evaluating the future of manager Tony Mowbray, and TEAMtalk has heard of three prospective successors.

The Black Cats finished sixth, just ahead of Mowbray’s former club Blackburn Rovers on goal difference.

Many feel Mowbray has worked miracles at the Stadium of Light, but it is thought that the club’s leadership is planning to take Sunderland in a different path this summer.

Sunderland have been examining the European market for a potential replacement to Mowbray, according to TEAMtalk.

Sunderland is considering three prospects, the first of whom is RB Salzburg’s highly regarded Matthias Jaissle.

The 35-year-old German is one of Europe’s fastest growing head coaches, having led Salzburg to the Austrian league and cup double last season. This season, a second Austrian Bundesliga title is also on the cards.

Francesco Farioli, a 34-year-old Italian, is also on their radar. Farioli was most recently the manager of Turkish club Alanyaspor.

The Black Cats have had a mixed start to the season, winning two and losing two of their first five Championship games.

Sunderland made an impressive return to the Championship last season, finishing sixth and losing in the playoff semi-finals to Luton Town.

There has been some conjecture over Mowbray’s future, although it has been stated that his top-six finish last season improved his position.

Sunderland are yet to make an announcement, but a one-year extension in Mowbray’s contract was triggered due to his team’s sixth-place result last season.

As things stand, he is now contractually bound to the Black Cats until the end of the 2024/25 season.

Sunderland’s status is secure for the time being, and the club is confident that Mowbray will improve on his performance from last season.

Sunderland will pay a visit to Loftus Road on Saturday to face Queens Park Rangers in the Championship.
