Former Sunderland striker draws parallels between Everton and Newcastle United as takeover speculation swirls.

One of Newcastle United’s Premier League opponents is thought to be on the verge of being taken over by an investment fund linked to Europa League winners Sevilla.

Rangers great Ally McCoist has drawn parallels between the fortunes of Newcastle United and Everton as the Toffees inch closer to new ownership.

According to reports, Everton owner Farhad Moshiri is nearing a deal to sell the Goodison Park club to Miami-based investment firm 777 Partners. The move comes after the Toffees had undergone a difficult era in their history, just avoiding their first-ever relegation from the Premier League over the last two seasons.

Moshiri stated earlier this year that he had been in talks with investors, and it now appears that his efforts may be fruitful, with a transaction thought to be close. 777 Partners will join Everton to a list of clubs in which they have invested, including Brazilian club Vasco de Gama, Belgian club Standard Liege, Bundesliga club Hertha Berlin, and Europa League champions Sevilla.

Everton’s financial difficulties in recent years have resulted in the sale of several players, including the £40 million transaction that sent promising winger Anthony Gordon to Newcastle last January.

previous Sunderland striker McCoist reviewed Gordon’s recent resurgence in form before comparing the state of his present and previous employers as rumors about a prospective takeover at the latter lingers.

“I thought he was excellent in the game they ended up losing against Liverpool,” he told talkSPORT.

“He appears to be enjoying his football, as if a weight has been lifted from him and he is simply getting on with it.” I had no idea he was so quick; I knew he was a fantastic player, but he’s also very, very quick. He seemed to be having a great time playing football right now.

Everton owner Farhad Moshiri confirms he has 'faith' in Frank Lampard ahead of sit-in protest

“I’m in the same boat as I was for many years with Newcastle fans with Everton fans.” When you look at the Everton and Newcastle fans, you have to sympathize with them. They’re similar in that they both care deeply about their clubs, and Newcastle has been clamoring for new ownership and a fresh direction for years.

“I just think Everton are in the same situation as Newcastle.”
