At the age of 46, ‘The Phenomenon’ is baptized: Ronaldo Nazario, a soccer legend, has converted to Catholicism.
Tuesday was a remarkable day for Ronaldo Lus Nazario da Lima, the Brazilian and world soccer great dubbed “O Fenômeno” (“The Phenomenon”), who, at the age of 46, received the sacrament of baptism.
Following the ceremony at So José (St. Joseph) Parish on So Paulo’s west side, Nazario, a two-time world champion with the Brazilian team, shared his experience on social media, emphasizing the significance of the momentous occasion in his life: “Today is a very special day. “I was christened!”
“Even though I had not yet been baptized, the Christian faith has always been a fundamental part of my life since I was a child.” “With the sacrament, I feel truly regenerated as a child of God, in a new, more conscious, and deeper way,” the Brazilian singer posted on Instagram on September 12.
Nazario also repeated his pledge in his message to “follow the path of good, of my own free will, believing in the love of Jesus, in supportive love.”
Along with the message, the former Barcelona, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, and other teams soccer star shared various photographs from his baptism, including his godparents Amilcar and Malu.
On this auspicious day, Nazario also honored the priests Fábio de Melo and Dom Oswaldo, as well as the church of So José.
In June 2022, Nazario fulfilled his commitment to cycle the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, demonstrating his developing devotion to the Catholic faith.
“I thought about a thousand things during the Camino, but I was grateful for many things that we have achieved with Valladolid,” said the former soccer star, who is also the club’s president.
The Camino de Santiago’s many starting places all lead to the grave of the Apostle James in Spain’s Santiago de Compostela cathedral.
