Ashley Young has revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson is scarier than Sean Dyche and still frightens him.
Ferguson signed the former Manchester United winger from Aston Villa in 2011.
Young now plays for Everton, who are managed by Sean Dyche. The 38-year-old joined the Toffees on a free transfer this summer and has started every game since.
Dyche has a reputation for being a rigorous and old-school coach over the years. However, no one seemed to come close to Ferguson, according to Young.
Young, who has 39 England caps, worked with Ferguson for two years before he retired in 2013.
The Englishman discussed his experiences working with both coaches in the talkSPORT studio.
Young was questioned in a conversation with Alan Brazil and Gabriel Agbonlahor, ‘Who’s scarier, Fergie or Dychey?’
‘The boss, I’d think,’ Young said. Because he is still the boss, I can’t even call him Fergie.’I told someone the other day that when he rings your phone and you see the boss calling…
‘It’s like, tone down the music, you’re still afraid of him when you answer. ‘Right now!’
Young won a Premier League, an FA Cup, a Carabao Cup, and a Europa League at Manchester United.
The winger-turned-fullback departed Manchester United in 2020 to join Serie A heavyweights Inter Milan.
He played one season in Serie A before returning to England to join Aston Villa. The defender was at Villa Park for two years before joining the Toffees in July ahead of the 2023-24 season.
Everton have had a difficult start to the season, with only one point from their first four games – a 1-1 draw away to Sheffield United before the international break.
Young also shared his opinions on working with Dyche, adding, ‘He (Dyche) is an old-school manager, but he has evolved with the changes.
‘That’s just the way football is now; you have to keep up. He’s a hard worker, and he expects you to work hard as well.
‘He’s a manager who wants to let his players play and express themselves. If you put in the effort, he will be there to support you and cheer you on.’
The Toffees will be searching for their first win of the season when they welcome Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal on Sunday afternoon, with Young expected to play a significant role.
