Tony Mowbray reveals Chelsea youngster’s strong first impression at Sunderland: ‘It was incredible…’
Mason Burstow, on loan from Chelsea, might make his Sunderland debut this weekend.

Tony Mowbray is hopeful that Mason Burstow can make a big impression at Sunderland after the youngster delivered a string of ‘unbelievable’ performances in training during his first week at the club. Burstow trained with Chelsea’s first team during pre season and the Black Cats moved quickly when he was made available for a loan switch at the end of the transfer window. The 20-year-old is expected to be in the squad to face QPR this weekend and as such, could be in line for his debut.

Mowbray is unlikely to make any big changes to the team that defeated Southampton 5-0 last time out, although Burstow is certainly the most likely to be included of the club’s four deadline-day acquisitions.
The head coach has warned that integrating Bustow into his new squad and developing an understanding of the team’s style of play would take time, but he is encouraged by what he is witnessing on and off the field in his early days at the club.

“He is a really nice, humble boy,” remarked Mowbray.

“To be honest, the first day he was here, the balls were getting net rash because he didn’t miss.” It was incredible how fast it came in.

“He appears to be exciting. He’s a quiet, unassuming youngster who is hammering it in the net. That is not meant to put pressure on him; it is simply the fact of his first training session, during which he must have scored 50 goals in an hour.

“He appears to be energetic, quick, and direct. He’s hungry, chasing around and working hard. He’s looking to score.

“For me, we just need to fine-tune his movement around how we play and whether he can or cannot do that, and if he can’t, we’ll have to tinker with it a little – leave him down the middle and slide more balls in behind.” He’s quick and mobile, and he can get the job done.

“I appreciate his humility, honesty, and candor.”

He aspires to be a footballer and improve his game. They’re fantastic attributes, and I just hope we can put the appropriate package around him to provide the opportunities, and then it’ll be up to his abilities.

“What I noticed on his first or second training day is that the potential is there; he understands where the back of the net is, whether it’s a sidefoot into the corner or a smash into the top of the net…

“He’s scored a variety of goals; I’m hoping we can create opportunities for him.”

Mowbray has stated that Nazariy Rusyn’s place in the QPR squad is contingent on his gaining clearance that he is able to play in time, following his first training session with his new teammates this week.

Timothée Pembélé will not be included in the matchday squad on Saturday since he is presently working on a training program designed exclusively for him.

to bring him up to speed.
