Everton and Arsenal goalkeepers Jordan Pickford and Aaron Ramsdale are quite similar, according to Chris Sutton, after both played for England during the international break.
Sutton cited an example of a free-kick being sent into the area in the 92nd minute of a tight game, and said he would choose Ramsdale over Pickford “every day of the week” in that situation.
The former Premier League striker claimed both players have advantages, but he prefers Ramsdale in goal, an opinion he thinks “most people” share.
“I believe he is a more accomplished and safer goalkeeper.” Pickford’s feet are cleaner in my opinion, but Ramsdale’s aren’t all that horrible.
“So, a free-kick whipped into the box in the 92nd minute of a tight game – who would you prefer in goal?” Sutton said on Mail Sport’s It’s All Kicking Off podcast on September 14. Ramsdale would win out over Pickford every time.
“I believe he is a more accomplished and safer goalkeeper.” Pickford’s feet are cleaner in my opinion, but Ramsdale’s aren’t all that horrible.
“I believe both goalkeepers are very evenly matched, but if you had to pick one, I believe most people would say Ramsdale over Pickford.”
The manager’s decision is the most important.
Ultimately, Gareth Southgate’s selection is the most important, with the England manager still seeing Everton’s keeper as his first choice between the sticks. While Ramsdale continues to shine for Arsenal, Pickford has claimed the number one slot.
Pickford has always delivered when England manager has called on him, turning in numerous spectacular performances for his country, with his exploits spanning from saving penalties on the greatest stage to commanding his defense and constructing from the back with his passing.
Ramsdale’s efforts for Arsenal have put him in contention to challenge Pickford, but for the time being, that is all he is doing. Unless something extraordinary happens between now and next summer’s European Championship, the Everton goalkeeper will be the first choice.
Sutton’s pleas are unlikely to be heard. Ramsdale’s status as Arsenal’s first-choice shot-stopper will make the public prefer him, but Pickford’s great Everton performances will not go ignored.
