Why does Jobe Bellingham not have Bellingham on the back of his shirt?

Jobe Bellingham, unlike his superstar brother Jude, does not have his surname on the back of his Sunderland shirt.

The Real Madrid star’s fast start in Spain has increased his profile, and he has played for England during the international break.

He scored and set up a goal for Harry Kane in his country’s 3-1 win over Scotland on Tuesday at Hampden Park.

Jobe, his younger brother, is also making headlines after joining Sunderland from Birmingham City for an undisclosed fee.

However, unlike Jude, he does not have the name Bellingham on the back of his shirt. He’s ditched it in favor of his first name and his No.7 squad number.

According to Tony Mowbray, manager of The Black Cats, the 17-year-old is attempting to forge his own identity and does not want to be defined by his brother’s name.

“I think he’s trying to create his own identity,” he explained. “He doesn’t want to live off the back of his brother’s name; he wants to be the footballer that he is and show people what he can do.”

Jobe scored the first two goals of his professional career in his side’s 2-1 Championship victory over Rotherham.

Mowbray lauded the young midfielder for his passion of the game and positive attitude.

“He’s an absolute diamond,” the seasoned coach remarked, “he just loves football and wants to improve.” Every day, he puts the coaches to the test. He has a strong growth mindset.

“At 17, it’s incredible. I’m not sure where he’ll be in five years, but I’m really satisfied with him now. His biggest asset is his eagerness to learn.”

According to one fan’s theory, Jude Bellingham’s shirt number at Birmingham was not retired due to the player’s performances.

The 20-year-old shone as England defeated Scotland 3-1 in a friendly to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the first-ever international match, which happened to be between the two teams.

Bellingham assisted Phil Foden’s opener before capitalizing on an Andrew Robertson error to score England’s second goal.

Then, in the game’s highlight, Bellingham glided through Scotland’s middle, faked a shot, and fed Harry Kane to score.

The friendly match served as another reminder of Bellingham’s position in the game. In recent years, the midfielder, who has 26 caps and is now Real Madrid’s leading scorer, has established himself as one of the world’s best players.

Of course, Birmingham City have lauded the youngster’s talent since his debut in August 2019 at the age of 16 years and 38 days.

The club retired his No.22 shirt in honour of Bellingham’s skills, hoping that the gesture will inspire the next generation of players at St Andrew’s.

Birmingham City remarked at the time, “In such a remarkably short space of time Jude has become an iconic figure at Blues, showing what can be achieved through talent, hard work, and dedication.”

“His caring, humble, and engaging demeanor off the field has also made him such an impressive role model.” The number 22 jersey has become linked with Jude, his rapid climb to the first team at the age of 16 years and 38 days, and these traits.

“As a result, the club has decided to retire this number in order to honor one of our own while also inspiring others.”

However, one fan claims that Birmingham retired Bellingham’s jersey for reasons other than his effectiveness on the field. According to Hubfootballuk, the player’s sale rescued Birmingham from going bankrupt.

“Jude Bellingham could have left Birmingham City for pennies, as he had not signed a Pro Contract with the club,” the user wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“Birmingham, who were in serious financial difficulties at the time, HAD to sell Bellingham for a large sum in order to keep the club afloat.”

“In essence, Jude Bellingham and his family virtually saved Birmingham City Football Club from Financial Fair Play and potential administration.”

Meanwhile, other supporters believe Bellingham’s jersey number was never retired, but was just put on hold in case he ever returned.
