Leeds United must examine these two variables before finalizing a new contract for the excellent Farke favorite – View

Leeds United may initiate contract talks with Jamie Shackleton soon if he continues to excel in the last year of his deal.

Leeds currently has several contracts ending in 2024, with some being significantly more important than others.

Whether or not any of them, including Jamie Shackleton, get new contracts may depend on their performances and where Leeds finish the season.

According to The Athletic’s Phil Hay, a new contract could be on the way for him, based on Daniel Farke’s current admiration for him.

Here, we look at two factors that Leeds must consider before offering the midfielder a new deal…

His dependability?

His early-season play has demonstrated that he has worth in this Leeds group led by a strong coach.

However, with only five league games played, we’re going on a very tiny sample size in a number of positions.

The main question for Shackleton is whether he can do this for more than a few games, especially if he’s covering a long-term injury in one position.

His hard work and enthusiasm have been his main qualities, but when we’re seeking quality all across the field in a promotion run, we’ll need more – let’s hope he can demonstrate that.

Is Shackleton in need of a new contract?

Shackleton, 23, has yet to demonstrate the quality to win a starting spot in a promotion-chasing club, having been in and out of the side under Marcelo Bielsa and Gary Rowett at Millwall last season.

If Leeds are promoted back to the Premier League this season, his goal of impressing will become immensely more difficult.

We’ll be back to square one with Shackleton if we rush into a long-term deal in the top tier and he becomes a peripheral player again.
