Everton manager Sean Dyche is under pressure right now, and journalist Paul Brown has been talking about his prospective replacement at Goodison Park.
Will Everton manager Sean Dyche be fired?
Dyche took over as manager of the Blues in January after Frank Lampard was fired, but he has struggled to make an effect at the club so far.
Granted, he kept them out of the Premier League with a tense 1-0 win at home against Bournemouth on the penultimate day, but Everton should not have been in that position in the first place.
This season has started in a similar manner, with the Merseysiders suffering three defeats and one tie in the league, as well as back-to-back home losses. On paper, Arsenal’s visit to Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon appears to be a tough challenge.
While Dyche’s position does not appear to be under threat at the moment, if results continue to be poor for an extended period of time, Everton officials may begin to explore for suitable candidates.
Will Graham Potter be the next manager of Everton?
Brown told Give Me Sport that Graham Potter replacing Dyche would make little sense owing to their opposing attitudes to football:
“I think going from Dyche to Potter would be too much of a leap from one extreme to the other.” One of Everton’s major issues has been the lack of a unified approach for who they are, what their identity should be, and how they should play or line up since Moshiri’s arrival.
“They’ve lurched from one extreme to the other every time they’ve had to fire a manager, and you’ve had to rebuild a team from the ground up for a completely different style of play.” That cannot continue.”
As previously stated, Dyche appears to have some credit in the bank for the time being, but it is only reasonable that the club is considering options if things do not improve in the next weeks and months.
Potter might be a fascinating choice for Everton, with the Englishman still regarded as a quality manager despite his disastrous tenure at Chelsea. In reality, that position appears to be difficult for any manager, so it would be unfair to judge him poorly there, especially given that Pep Guardiola hailed him “outstanding” earlier this year.
Brown is correct in that the former Brighton manager’s style of play differs greatly from Dyche’s – the former prefers a possession game, while the latter is known for being more direct – but if the Blues believe Potter is the best option to replace Dyche, they shouldn’t be concerned about players having to adapt to a new system.
For the time being, Everton should continue with Dyche, who still needs time to bring in new players after the summer transfer window closes.
There isn’t enough patience with managers in the contemporary game, and there’s no reason why he can’t turn things around after such a successful tenure at Burnley. The next few games leading up to the international break in October will tell us a lot more about him.
