Ian Evatt, manager of Bolton Wanderers, remains committed to summer recruiting.

IAN EVATT refuses to mope about Wanderers’ rising injury problems and maintains that the group is strong enough to prolong their promotion push.

With numerous players injured and severe worries over top scorer Dion Charles, Bolton manager Phil Parkinson may be down to his last 18 first-team players for this weekend’s visit of Peterborough United.

New signees Carlos Mendes Gomes, Paris Maghoma, and Zac Ashworth have joined a long line for the treatment room, which is unlikely to move much before the international break next month.

Evatt has slammed accusations that he should have planned for such injuries by bringing in more players during the transfer window.

Wanderers registered an EFL squad of 18 senior and 21 Under-21 players, including those presently playing in the B Team.

The club signed eight new players over the summer, and Evatt has defended his hiring selections, claiming that some of his younger recruits are still getting adjusted to his training techniques.

“We don’t have unlimited funds to keep signing players,” he said to The Bolton News. “We have a squad that we believe is competitive, a budget that we believe is competitive, and we recruit within that budget.”

“These things happen, and you will get hurt.” Every club will have to deal with them at some point throughout the season.

“What I will say is that the majority of our injuries are muscular, and when you look at the squad, it is the younger players who have picked up these issues.”

“We had the same thing happen last season in January because of the intensity with which we train; it’s completely different from what they’re used to, and you have to get them up to speed.”

“It is more physical than other teams and clubs, and it is something we are looking into, trying to manage better.” We’re hoping to have them all back as soon as possible because they’re game changers.”

Wanderers have lately brought younger players into the first team training group, including Luke Matheson, Nelson Khumbeni, Matt Tweedley, and Luke Hutchinson, and Evatt is confident that they can make the move up if necessary.

If Charles is unable to play due to a shoulder injury sustained in Saturday’s defeat at Reading, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, Dan Nlundulu, and Cameron Jerome will all compete for a starting berth up front. Evatt wants his players to be more ruthless in front of goal, regardless of the lineup.

“We have a couple of players on the outskirts, which is what the B Team is for, but obviously when everyone is available, we have a very good squad,” he explained.

“We’re a few men down right now, but that’s not why we lost the game (at Reading); we lost that one because we didn’t take our chances.” If you blow those opportunities, especially away from home, you are only a few seconds away from losing the game.”

Meanwhile, Wanderers have confirmed the rescheduled date of their away fixture against Shrewsbury Town.

Ian Evatt’s team will now visit the Croud Meadow Stadum on November 7 (7.45 p.m. kick-off).

The initial game was scheduled for September 9, but it was postponed owing to international call-ups.
