Tony Mowbray believes Sunderland are facing a new injury crisis.

Tony Mowbray has issued an update on Sunderland’s Pierre Ekwah’s injury.

Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray has stated that Pierre Ekwah and Bradley Dack will miss tonight’s game against Sheffield Wednesday.

Pierre Ekwah has had a strong start to the season.
The midfielder came from West Ham in the January transfer window earlier this year, and he appeared in 16 games for the Black Cats last season as they reached the play-offs.

Ekwah had taken on a larger role this season, starting every league game until he was pulled out in the win against QPR earlier this month due to a leg injury.

And he had been a major figure for Mowbray’s side, with his two goals in the thumping of Southampton being the high point.

Tony Mowbray gives an injury update.
Speaking to the Sunderland Echo prior of the game, Mowbray said that, while Ekwah does not have a serious injury, he would not play against Hillsborough, with Dack also missing out. Nonetheless, the pair might face Watford in midweek.

“I don’t think either of them will make it (for Friday), but not because they’re so far away.” We’re just trying to make sure they’re correct so they don’t break down when they return, especially with Bradley since we know hamstring problems are serious and can reoccur.

“With Pierre, we simply have to accept that he has a massive hematoma and a dead leg.” It was just unfortunate that he took the knock in the same spot where his movement has been restricted.

“There’s a slim chance he’ll be free flowing by Friday night.” What about next Wednesday? At this point, I’m not sure; it’s a day-to-day thing. It’s disappointing because it has a knock-on effect; we have so many attacking midfielders, and I’d want to be able to rotate, but we’re simply not quite there yet.”

Will Pierre Ekwah be remembered?

There’s no denying that the youngster’s injury is a setback, because, as previously stated, he had started the season brilliantly, bringing energy and drive to the middle of the field and contributing with a couple goals.

So, he’s a really excellent player, and he was missed in the Wearside outfit’s defeat to Cardiff last time out, when they weren’t at their best.

They did, however, overcome Blackburn without Ekwah, so Mowbray believes he has enough talent in his squad to earn maximum points against a struggling Sheffield Wednesday team later on. However, it is critical that they establish the appropriate midfield balance, and it will be intriguing to watch whether any changes are made following the Cardiff setback.

What happens next for Sunderland?
Sunderland will be focused on the Wednesday game, and they must capitalize on the fact that the Owls are under pressure. They are at the bottom of the table, and Xisco Munoz sorely needs a win because they are the only team to have won so far.

However, they may still pose issues, and Mowbray will ensure that his team is not complacent.

After tonight’s match, the Black Cats have games against Watford and Middlesbrough before the October international break.
