Megan Finnigan admits to being a’major disappointment’ for Everton Women.

Everton Women skipper Megan Finnigan expressed her “major disappointment” after her team was defeated 2-1 by Brighton on the first day of the Women’s Super League season.

Brighton established a two-goal lead after just 14 minutes, and despite a goal from Finnigan, the Toffees were unable to overcome the gap and turn the game around.

Finnigan has been critical of their inability to convert chances despite creating numerous opportunities to get back into the game, but he has urged fans to look for positives in the setback.

On October 2, the captain told Everton’s official website, “The overriding feeling is major disappointment.”

“Obviously, we wanted to start the season with a win, as did everyone else, but we got off to a slow start and were punished for it.” We gave up two pretty sloppy goals.

“The second half was a lot better, and there were a lot of positives to take away from it, but when you start a game as slowly as we did, you set yourself up for a big mountain to climb.”

“We couldn’t get back into the game; we created good opportunities but couldn’t convert them.” The game is over. We can just think about it and look for the good. Consider the downsides as learning opportunities. It happened far too many times last season, and it must not happen again.”

A shaky start

Everton began the season hoping to finish in the top four after finishing sixth the previous season. Losing on the first day will be a slight setback, but the focus should be on how the team responds immediately.

If they can win all three points against Leicester on October 8, their opening-day difficulties will be gone, and thoughts will turn to potential success this season.

Leicester defeated Bristol City 4-2 on the first day, but the two goals allowed will be something Everton can exploit with their attacking prowess, and they will be aiming to convert their opportunities better than they did against Brighton.

The squad should take the captain’s comments to heart. Now is the moment to learn from your mistakes, and if there was ever a time to afford poor results, it’s at the start of the season, when there’s plenty of time to grow and learn as you go.

In other Everton news, Frank Lampard has lambasted the club’s desperate players following relegation rumors.
