Southampton has extended the contract of a Premier League team transfer target.

The 20-year-old Argentine midfielder has impressed since joining Southampton from Racing Club in January and has now signed a one-year contract extension.

Carlos Alcaraz has agreed to terms with Southampton on a one-year contract extension that would keep him at the club until the summer of 2028.

The Argentine midfielder, who was called up to the Argentina national squad for the first time this week, joined Saints from Racing Club in January for about £12 million and has scored four goals in 13 Premier League appearances.

Alcaraz has made nine appearances this season, playing a key role in the recent victory over Leeds United at St Mary’s and Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium on Tuesday night.

Many teams have expressed interest in the 20-year-old since his arrival on the south coast, with Brentford, Crystal Palace, AC Milan, and Benfica among those thought to be admirers of Alcaraz, who has now signed an extension with Southampton.

“We are all delighted Charly has signed his new contract and we are really pleased he has committed his future to our fantastic football club,” said Jason Wilcox, Saints’ director of football.

“This is in conjunction with his full international call-up, and we are all extremely proud of him.” Charly has shown tremendous potential since his arrival and has already made a significant impression despite his early age.

“I’m very happy to renew my contract with this great club that opened the doors for me to play here in Europe,” Charly Alcaraz stated. It’s been fantastic because I’ve learned so much.

“I’ve grown to like the people of Southampton because they showed me right away that they wanted me here.” I’m overjoyed because they show me that they care about me and that I’m valuable to the squad, which makes me want to play even more.”
