According to Dom Smith, Everton were one of three Premier League clubs interested in signing Carlos Alcaraz from Racing Club in January before he joined Southampton.
The Evening Standard journalist revealed on his personal Twitter account (6 October) that the Toffees, along with Brighton and Crystal Palace, made a proposal to the Argentine club before Southampton clinched the £12.3 million purchase [Daily Mail, 11 January].
After Southampton’s relegation, Palace, AC Milan, and Benfica all made bids for him over the summer, but the Argentinian star elected to stay at St Mary’s. An exit in January is still possible, with Brentford intrigued.
Smith posted the following on Twitter: “Exclusive: Brentford remain interested in Southampton’s Carlos Alcaraz after they tried to sign him before he joined Southampton.”
“Crystal Palace, Brighton, and Everton all tried in January.”
“Crystal Palace then approached this summer, along with AC Milan and Benfica.”
a squandered opportunity
With Southampton now in the Championship, Alcaraz could be forgiven for thinking he chose the wrong team during the January transfer window.
Up to his move to St Mary’s, the Saint was a sinking ship, making his multi-million-pound decision all the more bizarre.
But, for Everton, it’s a huge missed chance given the club’s dire need for a creative midfielder throughout Sean Dyche’s stint at Goodison Park.
Alcaraz is a player with exceptional qualities and potential, and he’s already demonstrated how excellent he can be at the club, making some impressive cameos in the Premier League prior to Southampton’s relegation. In 18 games, he had four goals and two assists.
