After heavy interest from Sunderland, the Championship team has completed a free agent transfer move.

Silko Thomas, a former Sunderland trialist, has agreed to join Championship rivals Leicester City.

Silko Thomas, a former Sunderland trialist, has agreed to join Championship rivals Leicester City.

Earlier this summer, Thomas appeared for the Black Cats’ under-21s in friendlies against Kings Lynn Town and Huddersfield Town, scoring in both games.

The attacker was released by Chelsea at the end of the season after representing the club at the under-18, under-19, under-21, and under-23 levels during his time at Stamford Bridge. He was also connected with Blackburn Rovers.

Thomas previously trialed with newly-promoted Premier League side Sheffield United earlier this summer before joining the Black Cats.

Following that trial, Thomas’ rumoured three-year deal with Leicester City has now been formally declared by the player and club.

Sunderland and academy coach John Hewitson have agreed not to sign players who were on trial at the club this summer.

After departing the aforementioned teams, Thomas, 19, and 18-year-old defender Bobby Bjork, a Blackpool academy graduate, both played for the Black Cats’ under-21s side in a friendly against Huddersfield in August.

Gideon Granstrom, an 18-year-old Swedish midfielder, also had tryouts with Sunderland and Norwich over the summer.

When asked what happened to recent trialists, Hewitson told The Echo: “The club chose not to pursue, and the boys chose to go elsewhere.”

“It’s just one of those things; that was something we looked at; we tried different approaches but it just didn’t work.”

“We move on and have a look at other people really and it’s just one of them things.”
