Everton player outlines the key to a successful center-back partnership

Jarrad Branthwaite has spoken out about his achievements this season with Everton and how competition for positions has helped him grow.

Branthwaite, 21, had a great loan spell at PSV in Holland last season and has returned to English football with more confidence and experience than ever.

That has converted into a fantastic run of games under Sean Dyche in which he has excelled as one of Everton’s top players, earning him a new long-term agreement at the club as a result of his impressive performances.

Branthwaite has formed a strong connection with James Tarkowski, who was an ever-present in the Everton team last season, playing every minute, and Branthwaite praised his defensive partner, who has aided him in the early stages of this season.

“As I’ve mentioned in previous interviews, James is a big leader in the squad,” he told EvertonTV. “But not only in the squad, but also for me as I play alongside him.”

“He walks me through the game and tells me what to do. It’s essential for a young guy to have an experienced player next to him, and ideally we can keep that partnership going.”

He also discussed the rivalry for positions, which he will undoubtedly face as Michael Keane and Ben Godfrey wait quietly on the sidelines.

He has, however, started every game since his first start of the season against Wolves in August, and he is determined to keep his spot in the team.

“It keeps you on your toes because you have to train as hard as you can every day or the other defenders will take your place in the team.”

“The more competition there is, the better the performances.” Having that experience behind you, as well as the pressure to perform if you want to continue on the squad, is only beneficial.”
