Tony Mowbray is yet to receive a big transfer boost…
Sunderland are once again looking to compete for a place in the Championship play-offs this season, after suffering the heartbreak of being eliminated in the semi-finals last season. With 19 points in fourth place, ahead of Leeds United, Southampton and Norwich City, Tony Mowbray’s side have so far made a perfect case for a third promotion spot, with the focus being on a place at Wembley in May.

To secure the move they failed to make last season, the Black Cats could be looking to the January transfer window and a potential future star is struggling to find time compete in the Premier League.

What is Sunderland’s latest transfer news?
During the summer transfer window, the Championship side welcomed a number of players, from Jobe Bellingham to Jenson Seelt, as Sunderland’s summer spending hit the €8 million mark. The new arrivals have jumped right in, and Mowbray’s side have rarely missed a beat in the current campaign. And while Leicester City and Ipswich Town run away with automatic promotion, it is Sunderland and Preston North End who lead the chasing pack.

Positive news also continues to come to the Stadium of Light, with Amad Diallo’s latest transfer news suggesting Sunderland are keen to return the Manchester United youngster on loan in the new year. According to TeamTalk, the Red Devils are willing to allow the winger to make another temporary move after he was injured and therefore failed to make an impression on Erik ten Hag. With Diallo previously impressing on loan at Sunderland, those on Wearside are confident they can sign the 21-year-old again.

If Sunderland can secure a loan deal for Diallo again, then Mowbray could well have the final piece in their Championship promotion puzzle.

How did Amad Diallo perform at Sunderland?
On loan to Sunderland last season, Diallo’s goals and assists in the Championship speak for themselves. The former Atalanta winger scored 13 goals, while also serving as a passer three times. Meanwhile, when it came to the playoffs, he was at the heart of all the good work the Black Cats did, even scoring once. Mowbray is also certainly a big fan of the youngster, having previously praised Diallo.
I think he was emotionally engaged in Saturday’s game (against Luton) and that was great to see. With his physical data, he excels in every aspect, from distance to high-speed sprints, he has incredible stamina and shows off his talent.

“That bodes well for us and it also motivates me to think he will be a starter for us, not just a kid I can bring off the bench.”

That said, the ball appears to be in Sunderland’s court, making Diallo’s near future even more interesting. He enjoyed success at the Stadium of Light and he can now look to repeat that success in 2024.
